Moving out of Manitoba
If you are moving out of Manitoba, click here.
If you are temporarily leaving Manitoba, make sure your new jurisdiction allows you to maintain your Manitoba driver’s license throughout your stay. If you will be away during the time that it needs to be renewed, visit one of our offices to complete the appropriate paperwork in advance or complete an authorization form to allow an individual to renew it on your behalf.
**A word of warning – when authorizing an individual to renew your driver’s license on your behalf, verify first if you will require a photo. If so, we will also require a completed Driver Unavailable form to bypass the photo capture process.
If you are new to Manitoba
Vehicle insurance is provided on a public basis in Manitoba. Renewals occur once a year, four months after your birth date. Your driver’s license and any Autopac coverage expire together and are normally renewed at the same time.
To transfer your out-of-province driver’s license and/or vehicle insurance to Manitoba, you will require several documents. A summary of the requirements is listed here, and the full list of Driver Licensing acceptable documentation is also available (click here). You have 90 days from the date of your move to Manitoba to transfer your driver’s license and insurance over from your previous jurisdiction or until your current license and registration expires, whichever comes first.
Driver’s Education Students
If you are entering Driver’s Education, you will need to be set up as an Autopac customer in order to write your written test. When you attend one of our offices to become a customer, make sure you bring the following along:
- Canadian birth certificate or passport (or click here for an extended list of acceptable “Entitlement to be in Canada” documents)
- Two acceptable Manitoba address documents (see link to full list above)
- A parent or guardian
Please visit the Manitoba Public Insurance web site for more information on the Graduated Driver Licensing program.
Enhanced Identification Cards
Manitoba Public Insurance has launched an Enhanced Identification Card as a voluntary travel document for land or water entry into the United States. Please call one of our offices for more information on this program.
Commonly asked questions (FAQs)
- Can I sue another driver for hurting me in an accident?
Manitoba Public Insurance provides compensation to individuals who are injured in automobile accidents. Because of this, we cannot sue other Manitobans for bodily injury. However, when outside of our jurisdiction or in the event of property damage this restriction does not apply. For this reason, individuals are encouraged to purchase high limits of third party liability.
- I just purchased a vehicle. What paperwork do I need to register it?
When you purchase a new vehicle, you require the Bill of Sale and the New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) to register it. When you purchase a used vehicle, you require a Bill of Sale, Transfer of Ownership Document and a valid Certificate of Inspection. All documents must be originals and completed in full.
- Do we get discounts for good driving?
Yes. For every two years of clean driving (no at fault accidents and no major convictions) you earn one merit point on your driver’s license, to a maximum of five. Each merit point entitles you to a $5.00 credit on your license premium. Once you obtain one merit, you earn a 5% discount on your insurance premium every year to a maximum of 25% (again, you must maintain a clean driving record to qualify).
- I lost my driver’s license. How do I get a new one?
If your driver’s license is lost or stolen, a replacement can be issued at one of our offices. There is a $10.00 charge for the replacement, unless you are able to provide a Police Incident Number.
